Colgar arte en una pared puede ser bastante intimidante para aquellos de nosotros que no contamos con un extenso conocimiento sobre ese tema. Ya que muchas veces las piezas más hermosas pueden ser un poco costosas, siempre tomamos la decisión unánime y uniforme al momento de colgarla en la pared, y eso es simplemente montarla en el centro de una pared vacía, a medidas casi de galería de arte. Pero, si visitas por otro lado, casas de pintores o artistas, te puedes dar cuenta que ellos tratan sus obras como cualquier otro artículo del hogar, muchas veces simplemente recostando un hermoso trabajo de la pared o colocando una increíble escultura frente a un patrón en empapelado. Cosas que a nosotros los que no somos artistas jamás se nos ocurriría.
The Wall Street Journal da de ejemplo parte del libro «How We Live» por Marcia Prentice (próximo a salir ahora en octubre, 2015.) La autora menciona en su publicación que la clave al montar cuadros en el hogar es ver ampliamente y tenerle mucho cariño ya que «Las personas creativas están coleccionando arte de muchas fuentes distintas. No se sienten intimidados por el arte -simplemente van escogiendo piezas que aman.»
Mientas tanto, en el libro «Artists Living With Art» las autoras exponen una brillante idea. Es simple, los artefactos y memorias familiares son igual de importantes que una costosa escultura o cuadro. Por ejemplo, en tu sala puedes combinar una impactante pieza que compraste de tu fotógrafo favorito y que es muy reconocido, con un cuadro de algún artista que te fascine y quieras que todos conozcan y una pintura por los chiquitines de tu hogar. La yuxtaposición de todos estos elementos ofrece un tono imaginativo y nuevo a algo que de otra manera sería «más de lo mismo.»
También recomiendan que no trates tus piezas de arte como si estuvieras en un museo, esto da una vibra muy conservadora y estirada la cual quieres cambiar. Rota tus piezas regularmente para que no se vea fijo, esto le da una sensación más fluida a los espacios.
Aquí hay más estrategias que los creativos ofrecen para resolver este asunto:

En nuestras casas casi siempre estamos sentados; en el sofá, en la cama, en el comedor. Siguiendo este patrón el diseñador de interiores Sam Buckley ofrece la siguiente opción: cuelga tus piezas en la mitad de abajo de tus paredes. ¿Por qué? Porque una vez te sientas, ya no tienes la sensación de que todo está ocurriendo sobre tu cabeza. Al instalar las piezas al nivel de la vista cuando estás de pie, todo te pasa por arriba cuando estás sentado. El propone poner varias piezas de arte en el piso y recostarlas de la pared para dar una sensación de inclusión. A este estilo, el le incluye unas lámparas colgantes las cuales llevan el ojo hacia arriba.

En el caso de los artistas plásticos Carroll Dunham y Laurie Simmons (padres de la actriz, Lena Dunham) escogieron una técnica que en cualquier otra ocasión podría parecer algo vulgar: comprar arte que se parezca a los muebles de tu hogar. En el caso de la pareja, el motivo de espirales que tiene el empapelado de su hogar, se reflejaba en la escultura de la cual se enamoró Laurie, hecha por su amigo John Newman. Junto a la pieza, se pueden observar otros elementos como un plato color marrón el cual fue comprado en un mercado en Kyoto, Japón, un florero amarillo de la marca antigua Boch Freres, un envase de la diseñadora Ingegerd Råman y detrás de la escultura principal otra escultura de Carl D’Alvia. Según fuentes, Simmons estuvo un tiempo debatiéndose si debiera comprar la escultura, ya que pudiera ser una falta de respeto hacia el artista, pero le preguntó y estuvo encantado con la idea. Moral: A los artistas le es indiferente lo que hagas con sus piezas, siempre y cuando las trates con respeto.
La pared no tiene que ser básica y sencilla:
Lo que nos han dicho a través de los años es que una pieza de arte pierde su efecto si está puesta frente a paredes empapeladas con patrones. La arquitecta suiza Antonie Kioes decidió olvidarse de las reglas y ponerle arte a una pared aún con empapelado. Colgó una hermosa fotografía de Rodney Graham con un fondo en tela, diseñado por ella, de cuadriculado rojo. El fondo rojo, más los tonos monocromáticos de la imagen ofrecen una sutileza y calidez a un espacio que de otra manera sería aburrido y plain.
No es necesario que la pared sea blanca tampoco:
Esto es una técnica de museo para resaltar las piezas que otorgan el ingreso de la empresa. En las casas, los artistas regularmente deciden por lo opuesto, darle un fondo a color en el lugar para emanar calidez y sinceridad. El pintor italiano Francesco Clemente prefiere usar tonos tierra para vivir en armonía con sus pinturas. En su comedor tiene un color mostaza que resalta su impreso de Cy Twombly que cuelga sobre la chimenea.
