Todo comenzó cuando una joven de 23 años llamada Elizabeth se encontraba en un dilema, ya que trabaja horas muertas y su nuevo gato se la pasaba comiendo sus plantas de áloe (sábila). Ninguna compañero, amistad o familiar quería las plantas que ella por aproximadamente 10 años había estado cuidando y creciendo. Cuando vio un anuncio en su edificio sobre un intercambio de plantas, ella asistió al evento y le pareció interesante.
Cuando puso sus sábilas sobre un mesa, las intercambió por unos cáctus el cual se llevó para su hogar y su gato no se atrevía tocar… el evento fue un éxito. No solo intercambio plantas para su beneficio, pero también conoció personas nuevas con su mismo interés de plantas caseras. Aprendió técnicas nuevas de cómo cuidar y crecer sus pequeños «bebés».
Aparentemente los eventos de intercambio de plantas han crecido y recaudado popular en Nueva York. Pareciera algo completamente extraño y absurdo para muchos de nosotros en la isla ya que vivimos alrededor de constante vegetación, sin embargo es algo que tomamos por desapercebido. Según cuenta Elizabeth, es a veces difícil encontrar lugares en la ciudad donde se pueda conectar genuinamente con personas y este tipo de eventos crea un lugar real para las personas socializar en adición al fomento de crecer los lugares verdes en el planeta.
