El sistema funciona con paneles solares que obtienen la energía de un inversor para convertir la electricidad entre corriente y corriente alterna, de un medidor que carga la batería. Los paneles solares convierten la luz solar en electricidad para alimentar el hogar durante el día, y ésta almacena la energía para alimentar el hogar durante la noche.
El inversor de la batería convierte la electricidad de corriente almacenada en corriente alterna que usan las luces, los electrodomésticos y los dispositivos que se pueden encontrar en el hogar. El medidor, por su parte, mide la producción solar y la energía que se usa y almacena en el hogar.
Recientemente, el CEO de Tesla, Elton Musk, anunció que la segunda generación de baterías duplicara su potencia hasta más de el doble de la entrega inicial. De acuerdo a Tesla , la nueva Powerwall 2 dobla su capacidad hasta los 13,5 kWh, lo que será suficiente para proporcionar energía a un hogar de cuatro habitaciones hasta por 24 horas. La batería proporcionara alimentación continua de 5 kW con picos de hasta 7 kW, además de que estará garantizada para el mes de diciembre. La Powerwall 2 es la segunda generación de baterías para el hogar Powerwall creadas por Tesla para almacenar y producir energía en el hogar. Lo mejor de todo, el precio seguirá siendo el mismo.
