En la película, dos hermanos fiesteros llamados Mike (DeVine) y Dave (Efron) corren un anuncio en internet con el propósito de encontrar las parejas perfectas para asistir a la boda de su hermana en Hawaii. Ahora, los chicos que esperaban ser el centro de atención cuando de festejar de forma salvaje se trata, se encuentran siendo superados en todo por un dúo de chicas (Kendrick y Plaza) impredecibles e incontrolables.

Según Architectural Digest, originalmente la película iba a ser grabada en Napa, California. Sin embargo, no pudieron resistirse a filmar en esta acogedora isla. Las grabaciones tomaron lugar en Oahu, la tercera isla más grande del estado. Turtle Bay Resort, localizado en la costa norte, es el hotel en donde filmaron gran parte de la película. Este también sirvió de hogar para los actores durante el tiempo de producción. Cabe mencionar que la reserva natural, Kualoa Ranch, también ubicada en Oahu, fue otra de las zonas que utilizaron para filmar escenas de Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.
