Atrapan y filtran el agua de lluvia en el suelo y eliminan contaminantes.
Con una innovadora técnica para la conservación de los recursos de agua, empleados y voluntarios crearon una alianza con el Programa del Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan para crear un Jardín Pluvial en la Laguna del Condado. Este esfuerzo realizado bajo el programa de “Water Stewardship” es importante en la restauración del ecosistema de la Bahía de San Juan.
El jardín de lluvia es una infraestructura verde utilizada para mejorar el manejo de las aguas pluviales en las zonas urbanas. Atrapan y filtran el agua de lluvia en el suelo antes que llegue a un cuerpo de agua; ayuda a eliminar contaminantes, incluyendo fertilizantes, pesticidas, aceites, metales pesados u otros químicos que el agua de lluvia arrastra de las azoteas o del pavimento.
La intención del Estuario y MillerCoors con el jardín pluvial es aumentar la cantidad de agua de lluvia que se percola en el sitio, disminuyendo las aportaciones de agua de las superficies impermeables (pavimentos, construcciones, etc.) que pudieran provocar inundaciones urbanas por sobrecargas en los sistemas de infraestructura pluvial. Otro de sus beneficios es que se aporta al hábitat para ciertas especies de plantas y animales, mientras mejora el valor estético del lugar.
Decenas de voluntarios se involucraron en el proceso de crear el jardín que consistió de varios pasos:
- Prueba de percolación para determinar la capacidad de infiltración de agua del suelo existente.
- Excavación de cinco pulgadas de profundidad y ocho pulgadas de largo para remover parte del terreno.
- Preparación del suelo con tierra, arena y composta.
- Siembra de sobre 60 plantas de: Panpa Grass, Grey Mangroove y Lengua de Vaca.
- Barreras (piedras o rejillas) que evitan la retención del agua por el suelo y así impedir el posible desarrollo de larvas de mosquitos.
Durante el evento también se realizaron otras actividades a favor del medio ambiente: recogido de basura, métricas ecológicas, micro-plásticos de arena, siembra de mangles y monitoreo de calidad de agua en las áreas adyacentes de la Laguna. Como parte de la actividad, MillerCoors entregó un donativo de $4,000 al Estuario para continuar apoyando su trabajo de conservación.

¿Qué son los jardines de lluvia?
Son aéreas con flores y vegetación nativa que absorbe agua de lluvia. Están estratégicamente localizados para capturar la escorrentía de superficies impermeables como techos y carreteras. Los jardines de lluvia se llenan con unas cuantas pulgadas de agua después de una tormenta y luego el agua se filtra en el suelo en lugar de correr hacia un drenaje de aguas pluviales.
¿Por qué los jardines de lluvia son importantes?
A la vez en que los suburbios y las ciudades crecen, la creciente agua de escorrentía se vuelve un problema. Mientras más superficies impermeables son añadidas a nuestras comunidades, es más importante que nunca ayudar a la infiltración del agua de lluvia. Esto protege la calidad del agua y reduce la escorrentía del agua de lluvia.

Elija las plantas sobre la base de consideraciones de sitio para luz, humedad y el suelo. El uso de plantas nativas es altamente recomendable.
