¿Son peligrosos los árboles de navidad? Veamos… De un aproximado de 354,000 incendios de hogares que ocurren anualmente en los Estados Unidos, alrededor de 160 son atribuidos a árboles de navidad, según el National Fire Protection Association. Pero mientras que el riesgo es mínimo en comparación con incendios causados por electrodomésticos en las cocinas, el riesgo sí existe, por lo que es importante siempre minimizar los riesgos.
¿Cómo podemos minimizar los riesgos de un incendio causado por el árbol de navidad?
Al comprar el árbol:
- Elige un árbol verde, vivo y recién cortado (en Puerto Rico es difícil por razones obvias, pero trate de elegir uno lo más fresco posible).
- Escoja uno en que las hojas son difíciles de caerse. Jamaquee el árbol, una lluvia de hojas significa que el árbol está seco.
- La base del tronco de un árbol recién cortado está pegajosa con resina.
- Cuidado con árboles con un tinte verdoso en el tronco y las ramas; muchos cultivadores pintan los árboles verdes para aumentar su atracción.
Montando el Árbol:
•Al montar un árbol en la casa, colóquelo lejos de chimineas, radiadores, calefactores portátiles, rejillas de calefacción, y televisores o cualquier aparato electrónico.
•Corte unas dos pulgadas de la base del tronco así exponiendo madera nueva para mejor absorción de agua.
•Mantenga el pedestal lleno de agua, porque los cuartos con calefacción secan los árboles muy rápido. Un árbol absorbe hasta un galón de agua en las primeras 24 horas y uno o más cuartos por día después.
•Si un sello se forma en la base del árbol, corte otro poco de la base. Un sello de resina seca se formará en el tocón en cuatro a seis horas si el nivel del agua cae debajo de la base del árbol, prevenido así que el árbol absorba agua después al volver a llenar el pedestal.
- Recuerda no colocar el árbol bloqueando puestas, ventanas o pasillos, o lugares en general considerados como salidas de emergencias.
Al decorar el árbol:
- Siempre utilice luces que hayan probadas para segurdad. LED SIEMPRE son las mejores alternativas. Las bombillas LED, no solo no generan calor, y son duraderas, sino también le ahorran a la hora de pagarle a energía eléctrica.
- Inspecciones todas las luces que no tengan alambres expuestas, rajadas o desgastadas.
- Utilice un máximo de tres juegos de luces de tamaño normal por cada extensión.
- Use solo una extensión por enchufe y por receptáculo.
- Siempre mantenga las exenciones y conexiones de luces lejos del suministro de agua del árbol.
- Utilice decoraciones no combustibles o resistentes al fuego.
- Proteja el árbol con un estilo de cerca que aleje a mascotas y a niños curiosos.
- Al colocar los regalos, nunca los deje cerca de las conexiones o receptáculos.
Al culminar la navidad:
- No espere demasiado tiempo para quitar el árbol. Sabemos que Puerto Rico tiene las navidades más largas del mundo, sin embargo, el dejar el árbol más allá del tiempo adecuado expone un riesgo de fuego.
- No deje el árbol dentro de la casa al desmontarlo.
- Para deshacerse de su árbol, llévelo a un centro de reciclaje de árboles o que lo pase a recoger un servicio de recolección de la comunidad. Si usted vive en el campo o en un pueblo que no cuenta con programas de reciclaje de árboles o de recolección, comuníquese con las autoridades locales para recomendaciones de como deshacerse del árbol.
- Nunca queme los árboles. Los abetos y los pinos tienen mucha resina, la cual puede explotar. Las hojas se queman como yesca, rápido e intensamente. Las llamas pueden estallar fugazmente fuera de control y enviar chispas volando de un lado a otro de un cuarto.
