En Europa, Asia y en varios países de América Latina es costumbre y hasta se fomenta que se tome una siesta durante las dos horas de almuerzo que por lo regular las empresas brindan, pues ahoa existe la silla de oficina que se reclina completamente, perfecta para dicha actividad.
Estudios han mostrado que tomar siestas ayudan a mitigar los efectos de la privación del sueño y, por lo tanto, son una ayuda útil para restaurar su productividad a niveles óptimos. Dormir solo una hora adicional cada semana (algunos 12-15 minutos diarios) se correlaciona con un aumento productividad en la tardes.
Hay algunas pruebas que vinculan las siestas, específicamente, con los beneficios laborales. Por ejemplo, un estudio realizado por la Universidad de Michigan asignó al azar a 40 participantes adultos a dos grupos. Un grupo tomó una siesta de 60 minutos y el otro vio un video de la naturaleza; para el grupo de «siestas», los investigadores encontraron los siguientes resultados:
