Su hermosa arquitectura, Estilo Viejo San Juan, se ha encargado de enamorarnos y acogernos mientras caminamos por los adoquines que arropan sus calles. Algunos piensan que por habitar una pequeña isla, no tenemos mucho qué contar. Sin embargo, estas edificaciones están llenas de historia que embellecen aun más nuestra ciudad.
El Viejo San Juan se caracteriza por sus edificios de dos plantas o más con un sentido de armonía y belleza. Los mismos eran construidos en mampostería, es decir, una mezcla de ladrillo, cemento y piedras; elemento que los hace resaltar en muchas ocasiones. La fachada es sencilla y romántica, y por lo general tienen realces alrededor de sus puertas.
Sus atractivos balcones son volados, siendo esto una clara herencia española. Los mismos son corridos, es decir, ocupan un extenso espacio. La parte superior de muchos de estos balcones culminan con un elemento clásico llamado cornisa, parte sobresaliente que tiene como función evitar que la lluvia incida directamente por la pared. Otra característica son las pérgolas. Los balaustres en madera o en hierro también se pueden encontrar en los balcones. No podemos negar que al pasear por estas calles, nuestro campo visual se inunda de pura belleza.
En el interior de estas estructuras, generalmente encontraremos techos altos y planos con vigas en madera, estas sostienen los ladrillos y dan un sentido de carácter debido a su colores oscuros y a la irregularidad que crean en el techo. Es recomendable utilizar colores suaves en el resto de la estancia para crear un buen contraste. En la parte superior se encuentran azoteas que se pueden utilizar como terrazas o áreas de desahogo. Esto es posible gracias a que los techos son planos, como ya mencioné.
