Elon Musk, dueño de Tesla Motors, dijo en el evento que utilizó para anunciar este nuevo producto, que «tratará de cambiar la estructura fundamental de la energía en el mundo.» Un reto que el mismo Nikola Tesla tuvo que tratar de sobrepasar sin mucho éxito.
Estas baterías ya tienen tanta demanda (al rededor de 38,000 reservaciones del producto hasta el momento) que Musk dijo que la misma compañía no puede seguir al ritmo de las órdenes ya que por cada hogar se deberían instalar hasta un total de dos (2) baterías. Haciendo el total de producción alzarse a un poco más de 60,000 unidades.
Para los consumidores que utilizarán estas baterías en el hogar, -que se deben instalar junto a paneles solares-, Tesla Motors ofrecerá dos versiones. Una que ofrece un sistema de siete (7) kilowatts por hora, que costará al rededor de $3,000 y uno de 10 kilowatts por hora que costará unos $3,500.
Una casa promedia 2 a 5 kilowatts por hora, por lo tanto el «Powerwall» podrá producir electricidad por su cuenta por varias horas. Haciendo de este una tremenda alternativa a la tradicional planta de gas. El aparato estaría sujetado a una pared cerca de un panel de electricidad y utiliza unos controles inteligentes que balancearían las baterías con la energía solar, decidiendo cuando utilizar la energía directamente de los paneles y cuando reservarla en la batería. Cada batería incluye una garantía de 10 años.
Suena como una tremenda opción, y aunque Elon Musk quiera llevar esta tremenda tecnología al mercado comercial, todavía esta muy alto el precio. Si sumas todo lo que necesitas para poder instalar esta tecnología, se lleva al rededor de $20,000.
