No queremos asustarlos, y mucho menos hacer que boten todas sus toallas al zafacón; pero nos gustaría informarles sobre la manera correcta de limpiar y desinfectar sus toallas, para así prevenir el riegue de bacterias en el hogar.
Las toallas de cocina y las de baños son una gran fuente de sucio, además de que por supuesto cargan en sí gérmenes y microorganismos. El Dr. John Swartzberg, profesor clínico en la Universidad de California, Escuela de Salud Pública de Berkeley, le explicó al Wall Street Journal porque el agua caliente no esteriliza las toallas y dice por qué la mejor solución es echarlas a la basura.
Estudios recientes han encontrado que en las toallas de cocina se encuentran una gran cantidad de microorganismos -como la Salmonella y la Campylobacter- las cuales existen en suficientes cantidades para transferirse a un utensilio o plato, y luego a nosotros.
El doctor comenta que «nadie ha determinado que las toallas en sí son la fuente de enfermedades a causa de comida en los humanos.» En otras palabras, una toalla de cocina, en teoría, puede hacer que una persona se enferme pero este dato no ha sido comprobado.
En cuanto al baño, el moho y el hongo crecen rápidamente en toallas mojadas o húmedas. Sí, les da trabajo manteniéndose vivos cuando la toalla se seca, pero en cuanto la toalla se vuelve a mojar, allá van a revivir de nuevo. Además, la piel muerta y el sucio que llevas en el cuerpo se pega a las fibras de la toalla si te secas vigorosamente el cuerpo o la cara.
El compartirse las toallas en la casa, aunque sea entre miembros de la misma familia, puede terminar siendo peligroso. Si alguien padece de condiciones como pie de atleta o infecciones por bacterias, el reutilizar una toalla, tan si quiera una vez, puede tanto volver a introducir la bacteria al cuerpo o transmitirlo a otro anfitrión.
El Dr. Swatzberg recomienda lavar o cambiar las toallas de la cocina dos o tres veces en semana y una o dos veces en semana las toallas de baño.
Para eliminar la mayoría de estos microorganismos en cualquier toalla, las debes lavar en m´quina con agua caliente y detergente. Para estar más precavido todavía, seca tus toallas en la temperatura más alta.
