La reconocida diseñadora de interiores y socia de la firma Álvarez-Díaz & Villalón, Cristina Villalón ha sido seleccionada por la revista design:retail como una de los 40 UNDER 40— una prestigiosa lista internacional de diseñadores jóvenes cuyo trabajo los ha distinguido dentro del campo del diseño al detal a nivel internacional. Comenta Villalón, «Es un honor ser incluida entre estas 40 personas que son los mejores diseñadores en la industria del diseño al detal”. Villalón fue seleccionada en reconocimiento de sus múltiples aportaciones a y su fuerte creencia en el diseño sostenible. La joven profesional ha tenido gran éxito en Puerto Rico, los Estados Unidos y al exterior con sus innovadores proyectos eco-conscientes que han logrado re-imaginar y revivir un sinnúmero de marcas comerciales para una nueva generación de clientes, al mismo tiempo que ayudan a reducir, de manera significativa, los gastos de energía. Cristina continúa elevando la barra para su profesión, siempre en busca de nuevas alternativas para el siempre cambiante mercado de diseño.
Por otro lado, este año Álvarez-Díaz & Villalón fue nombrada entre las primeras 50 firmas en el campo del diseño al detal a nivel internacional por la revista VMSD (“Visual Merchandising Store Design”): el líder mundial en recursos e información para diseñadores de tienda y compradores de mercancía visual, publicación que ha servido a la industria del diseño al detal desde el año 1897. Ésta es la tercera vez que la firma Álvarez-Díaz & Villalón ha recibido este importante reconocimiento.

Detrás del éxito a largo plazo de la pareja aquí en su país natal de Puerto Rico, también posee una base sólida de credenciales y proyectos realizados en los Estados Unidos continentales. Álvarez- Díaz comenzó su carrera trabajando en Nueva York bajo el renombrado arquitecto y educador Robert A. M. Stern y recibió su título de Licenciado en Arquitectura de la Universidad de Notre Dame. Villalón cuenta con una Maestría en Ciencias en Diseño de Interiores del Instituto Pratt con formación de posgrado en la Academia Real en Copenhague, Dinamarca.
La sede principal de Álvarez-Díaz & Villalón® está ubicada en un antiguo edificio en la zona histórica de Santurce, anteriormente una escuela para niñas, que data desde los principios del siglo pasado. Es la primera y única firma de arquitectura y diseño de interiores en Latinoamérica en recibir una certificación LEED CI de Platino por el diseño de sus oficinas centrales.
