La silla «Up» fue diseñada por Gaetano Pesce en 1969 y al día de hoy, su diseño aún es tema de qué hablar. La idea le llegó a Gaetano Pesce en la ducha. «Tenía una esponja en la mano», dijo. «Cuando presioné la esponja, se encogió, y cuando la solté, volvió a su volumen original». Esta imagen lo inspiró a crear la silla de poliuretano emergente, cuyas versiones originales ahora residen en museos de diseño alrededor de todo el mundo, incluido el MoMA en Nueva York.

La silla Up5 y su ottoman Up6 que lo acompaña se lanzaron al mercado para la venta hace 50 años, en 1969. Los muebles estaban hechos de poliuretano, un material revolucionario en ese momento. La silla Up podría comprimirse a una décima parte de su volumen para el envío (súper conveniente), y luego se expandía permanentemente una vez que se abra.
